You are Carried.

As you move into this new week, a poem…

i carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
i go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
i fear

no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)

This e.e. cummings poem has been close to my heart for most of my life, and it has unfolded new meaning many times. Nine years ago, it took on specific meaning, I read it as part of the eulogy I gave at my childhood best friend’s funeral. I included it because it felt true – that from the moment she passed, I was (and still am) living for her in some ways also. I feel deeply connected to Casey and know that I always will. And that poem has shown up many times over the years to remind me of our connection.

Then, last year, during a particularly hard time, I attended a gathering ritual with a community I was close to, and we were asked to share something from our hearts. I did not know what I would share, but as it came to be my turn, that poem decided it needed to be spoken. I was feeling disconnected spiritually in those dark times and I wasn’t aware of the impact it would have on me to reconnect to this poem.

I saw that it was not just me that was carrying Casey, or the other people I loved. I was also being carried. That it could be Casey speaking to me, and in the same way, it could be the divine speaking to me and carrying me. That my connection with the divine, and my connection with all the beings I loved and all the love that surrounds me, whether I see or feel it in any given moment or now is “the root of the root and the bud of the bud and the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows higher than soul can hope or mind can hide.”

Again, last week, during a small spiritual gathering, the poem returned to me, asking to be shared. And so I did. And I knew after revisiting it that I also wanted to share it with you. Because this is The Connected Way.Connection is what supports us most in times of need. And we are all connected; we carry each other and we are carried. And I believe that we are all connected to and carried by divine loving energy, even when we can’t feel it or see it.So, as you navigate this difficult time, I hope that you will lean on the knowing that you are connected on so many levels and in all the layers.

In love and light,

Devin Green
